Butt Splitters: “We just want to make more albums, play as much as possible in increasingly larger venues, and keep having fun with the people who come to see us”

“Right now, we are working on touring around Europe and writing our new album… stay tuned!”

Welcome to Polismagazino.gr. Introduce the band in a few words.

The main purpose of the Butt Splitters is to have fun. For us, it means enjoying being together, playing songs that we like, and sharing this feeling with everyone we meet on and off the stage.

When did you start as a band?

The band was founded in 2019. In the beginning, we used to play only heavy metal covers from our favorite bands or international hits. However, during the pandemic lockdown, we found a lot of inspiration and started writing our own music out of curiosity. What came out is our first concept album named “NIBELVIRCH,” which is based on Paul Amadeus Dienach’s diaries.

What is your first musical memory?

If you mean our first memory as a band, the one that comes to mind is not exactly musical. It was the day I was at a concert with Stefano, the singer, and I told him, ”Why don’t we start a band just to have fun, without any special purpose?” I think that is the exact moment where everything started.

Who are the members of the band?

The band is composed of Stefano Firmani (vocals), Francesco Martinelli (bass and backing vocals), Matteo Scorsolini (drums), Carlo Tabarrini (guitar), and Marco Radicchi (guitar and backing vocals).

Describe to us your career in music to date. Were there any decisive positive or negative influences?

Of course, all the covers we played influenced us, along with our individual backgrounds—everyone here played in different bands both before and after forming the Butt Splitters. However, I think the process of producing our album and setting up a live show with video projections and everything else really pushed us to a higher standard.

Are you “scared” by success or failure?

Not really. We aren’t trying to become “rock stars.” That would be great, of course, but it’s unrealistic. We just want to make more albums, play as much as possible in increasingly larger venues, and keep having fun with the people who come to see us. I don’t see any reason to be scared of that, and so far, it seems to be working perfectly.

Tell us a few words about your latest release.

Our first, and so far only, album is a concept record based on the diaries of Paul Amadeus Dienach. He was a real person who suffered from encephalitis lethargica—a fairly common illness in Europe at the time—and fell into a coma for a year in 1921. During that time, his consciousness was transported to the years 3905-3906, where he saw how the world had changed and what had happened in the centuries in between, which include the very years we are living in today. The story is truly intriguing, and I highly recommend looking it up online. Despite this deep theme, the tracks were composed individually without a deliberate plan to have a common thread, except for the lyrics being based on specific events from the diaries. In the end, though, the whole work is perfectly cohesive. Let’s just say Paul gave us a hand!

Who edits the lyrics and music?

When it comes to the music, it usually starts with ideas from Carlo and me, the guitarists. We typically lay down an entire track first (minus the lead guitars), then we share it with the rest of the band, and everyone tweaks it until it sounds great. Normally, almost nothing is left of the original idea by the end! Songs that don’t fit well are simply rejected. All the work on the lyrics is strictly Bubba’s business—as the singer, he usually does everything on his own.

What are your future music plans?

Right now, we are working on touring around Europe and writing our new album… stay tuned!
