The breath of the ancient East burns under the fire of war
By His Highness Prince Ahmad Ali Al Samad, Prince and Head of the Al Samad Imperial Royal House, currently the de facto ruler of Lebanon:
The Middle East is witnessing one of its most sensitive phases since the outbreak of war, as political and military crises intersect on several critical fronts, each with its own unique complexity, reflecting a clear escalation in regional tensions.
Regarding the Iranian issue, the United States continues to exert political and military pressure aimed at pushing Tehran to make concessions on its nuclear program. Meanwhile, Iran appears more cautious and determined in managing the confrontation, having become less confident in American guarantees and more inclined to avoid responses that could trigger a wider war, while maintaining its deterrent capabilities.
In the Red Sea, the situation is becoming increasingly complex with the escalating tensions around Bab el-Mandeb, posing growing challenges to international navigation and energy security, and making any miscalculation capable of igniting a confrontation unlike any before. In Iraq, the situation is highly sensitive, with ongoing friction between the United States and armed factions, amidst mutual threats that increase the likelihood of escalation. This makes the Iraqi arena one of the most prominent potential flashpoints, especially after the attack on Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) headquarters and their stated intention to retaliate.
In Syria, political and security rhetoric is escalating. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa emphasized the Syrian state’s readiness to defend its sovereignty, amidst rising tensions on its borders with both Iraq and Lebanon. Media reports indicate security preparations by various parties, reflecting the fragility of the situation and the potential for further escalation if the mutual provocations continue.
The Lebanese arena cannot be overlooked, as it remains one of the most sensitive, important, and complex fronts in the region. Media reports and security assessments indicate that Hezbollah remains on high alert due to ongoing tensions with Israel, alongside growing talk of a potential security and military clash on the Syrian border if regional tensions persist. Against this backdrop, various parties appear to be raising their military readiness levels in anticipation of any sudden developments, even if a decision for a full-scale confrontation has not yet been made.
Amidst the fronts stretching from Tehran to Baghdad, from Damascus to southern Lebanon, and all the way to the Red Sea, the region seems to be undergoing a redrawing of the balance of power. A single miscalculation or major incident on the ground could ignite a regional war whose repercussions could extend to most of the Middle East. Thus, the breath of the ancient East burns under the fires of war, forcing it to shed its old garb and don the new, while the world watches to see if diplomacy will succeed in containing the crisis, or if the region is indeed on the brink of a new chapter of regional conflicts.
The breath of the ancient East today seems heavy with the smell of gunpowder, but the region’s future will remain contingent on calculated decisions.
The convergence of these issues at the same time paints a picture of a region standing at a crossroads. Either diplomatic efforts will succeed in containing the escalation, or the accumulation of crises will lead to a regional confrontation with repercussions that will extend far beyond the borders of the Middle East.
