“The Sounds of Starves” by Mohammad Kutubuddin

Επιμέλεια: Εύα Πετροπούλου Λιανού

A sound rises upon the sky,
knocking through my ears from both sides—
and through my soul—
as I fly in the air.

Can you imagine this sound?
Guess:
A heartbreaking song?
A sound offering love to couples?
Or the crying of the sky?
A sound flowing from deserts?
Or danger from the deep forest?

What kind of sound troubles us?
The world is full of sounds,
echoing from every corner.

But this sound is different.
It breathes through my soul,
turning horrible within me.
It offers a message
to the responsible ones,
alarming those in power.

It is pathetic,
growing weaker,
losing its strength,
the sound of the starving.

This is the sound of the starved:
Masses struggling to die,
calling to death to come.
They deserve to live—
yet the world watches,
as if enjoying the spectacle.
