A Millennium Covenant poem by Wan Yilong (Aming Gaotu)

In the long river of time through endless reincarnations

I have never ceased to ask

Who am I

Where do I come from

Where am I bound

When the first golden ray of dawn

kisses the sacred peak of Yulong Snow Mountain

When the lion of white conch hue roars in the valley

When the crimson tiger bounds through layered peaks

When the divine graceful deer

wanders leisurely through green fields and paths

When the Jinsha River with irresistible force

comes surging forward mighty and unceasing

When the ancestors in the Dongba scriptures

wave with smiles from the snow-capped summit

When the Nature Deity in the Dongba classics

gazes up at the vast starry sky looking into the firmament

When the Roc God subduer of demons and evils

spreads its soaring wings and cuts through the sky

When the Dongba priest blows the sacred conch

its holy sound pierces the vastness of time

In the eternal chant of the Dongba epic Genesis —

On the summit of the sacred Mount Junaruo

Within the spiritual charm of the sacred stone Zengzheng Hanlumei

In the depths of the sacred lake Meiru Dajiha

On the lofty branches of the sacred tree Hanyi Bada

comes an affectionate call across eternity —

“Come! We have been waiting for you through the ages!”

Then we

from the vast and wild northern lands

from the gifted and beautiful southern regions

cross ten thousand rivers and a thousand mountains

gather in the colorful land of the south

to keep this millennial covenant of destiny

We cry out as one —

“We are here! We are all here!”

From then on we stand side by side

To ordain heaven’s purpose to secure the people’s life

To inherit the supreme wisdom of the ancient sages

To forge eternal peace for all generations

We devote ourselves to protecting and inheriting Dongba culture

that this World Memory Heritage

may bless all ages and shine gloriously upon the world

May the immortal spirit of the Mother of the Earth

go forth to the world toward the future

When the Star-Diamond Civilization

rises slowly in the magnificent East

the ideal of a world of great harmony

shall amid the brilliant Milky Way

bloom with eternal radiance

Footnote

This poem is an artistic crystallization of the shared cultural mission and fateful gathering of three kindred spirits: Wan Yilong, Lan Xin, and Aheng Dongta. Traveling across mountains and seas from far and wide, they converged in the colorful land of Yunnan, discovered a site rooted in an ancient millennial temple, and jointly founded the Yulong Wenbi Dongba Culture Academy, a public welfare institution. Devoted to safeguarding Dongba culture, a World Memory Heritage, as their lifelong vow, they have given poetic expression to this destined encounter and sacred mission.

Rooted in the essence of Genesis, the classic Dongba epic, the work weaves iconic symbols of Dongba civilization—such as the sacred Mount Junaruo and the divine tree Hanyi Bada—into a narrative of spiritual dialogue spanning past and present lives. The affectionate call that traverses eternity in the poem is both the long-cherished hope of millennium-old Dongba culture for its inheritors, and the profound spiritual resonance between the three companions and this ancient civilization. They have finally kept the covenant, living up to this age-old wait.

Their journey from the northern and southern regions to Yunnan is a pilgrimage of shared purpose for cultural inheritance; the cry, “We are here! We are all here!” is a solemn response to the Dongba ancestors, and a firm declaration that the three founders have taken up the torch of heritage. Every verse carries the millennial profundity of Dongba culture, as well as the sincere devotion of the three in fulfilling their mission.

This poem is also a sacred oath of the three founders: grounded in their public welfare academy, in the birthplace of Dongba culture, they preserve ancient scriptures and pass down timeless wisdom, revitalizing this ancient civilization that reveres nature and pursues harmony. The vision at the poem’s end—of a star-diamond civilization shining in the East and the ideal of a world of great harmony blooming radiantly—reflects both the core pursuit of Dongba culture and the ultimate mission of the three practitioners: to bring this millennial Eastern wisdom to the world, nourish the shared spiritual home of humanity, and infuse the ideal of global harmony with Eastern strength.
